It's bad enough when you find cellulite on your hips, butt and thighs. But when a friend of mine began to notice cellulite on the back of her arms, she was mortified! While the lower body is the typical place for cellulite to appear, it can also show up on your arms.

As a woman who loves to wear tank tops and strappy dresses, I know how devastating this can be. That's why today I'm going to share 5 tips for how to get rid of cellulite on arms.

What is Cellulite?

Put simply, cellulite is the accumulation of fat under your skin. Each of us have connective tissue that lies just beneath the skin. The structure of this tissue varies from person to person.

Unfortunately, depending on the design of your connective tissue, the fat can protrude up through the web and form lumpy or bumpy skin. This is why even some thin people are prone to cellulite.

Cellulite is most noticeable in your butt, hips, midsection and thighs. For some not-so-lucky folks, cellulite will make an appearance on the arms. The good news is that cellulite itself can't hurt you. Cellulite is often associated with being overweight but there are some other causes too.

What Causes Cellulite?

Cellulite can be caused by a variety of things. Your gender, skin type, skin color and genetics can all determine your risk of developing cellulite. Those risk factors can't be avoided since they are part of your genetics.

There are some risk factors that can be avoided however. For instance, dehydration, excess weight, excess fat, hormonal issues or sedentary lifestyle can all cause cellulite in arms, and elsewhere on your body. No matter what the cause of your cellulite, there are ways to minimize its appearance.

How to Get Rid of Cellulite on Arms

As a woman, cellulite on your arms can be especially devastating during the summer months. I have many friends who won't wear tank tops because they are just too embarrassed. If you live in a hotter climate having cellulite on your arms can be even more detrimental.

Have no fear though, there are plenty of ways to deal with cellulite on your arms. The methods I list below will help you easily minimize the appearance of cellulite and possibly work toward eliminating it completely. In order to do this try the following:

1. Apply a Self-Tanner

Self-tanner is one of the easiest and quickest ways to lessen the appearance of cellulite. For us fair-skinned ladies (and men), cellulite can be way more noticeable. Self-tanner is the perfect addition to your beauty regimen if you are heading to the beach or pool sometime soon. Its application will immediately reduce the appearance of cellulite in arms.

Celebrity faux-tanner Jimmy Coco suggests a two-layer technique. First, apply a self-tanner directly to your cellulite trouble areas, then spray your entire body with a self-tan spray. He states, "The contouring has a slimming effect that lasts several days."

Since I'm a fan of all-natural beauty regimens, I strongly suggest purchasing an all-natural, toxin-free self-tanner. There are tons out there to choose from. This one is my favourite.

2. Drink Plenty of Water

My number one rule in life is to hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! No matter what. Why? Because our bodies love (and need!) plenty of water in order to function at an optimal level. It's no different when it comes to cellulite.

Dehydration can dry out your skin and make it look wrinkled, lumpy and old. You'll immediately be on the road to reducing cellulite on your arms by simply staying hydrated. The general rule is to aim for at least eight 8 oz glasses of water per day. This amount may increase or decrease based on how much exercise you do and whether you tend to sweat a lot.

Most importantly, listen to your body. A dry mouth or parched feeling will tell you that you might need to chug some H20. Another good tactic is to try drinking water prior to each meal. That way you can differentiate thirst from hunger (which will help with weight loss too!).

3. Wear Sunscreen

If you've ever accidentally fallen asleep on the beach without your sunblock then you certainly understand the importance of lathering up before a day in the sun. I know I often neglect my arms, especially the backs, when applying sunscreen.

If you are trying to minimize cellulite on your arms then lathering up is especially important. According to Women's Health Mag, "UV rays can damage collagen, which ultimately makes cellulite more apparent."

To keep your all-natural, non-toxic beauty regimen going, make your own sunblock at home.

You can find plenty of great tutorials on YouTube, many containing ingredients that you may already have in your kitchen.

4. Clean Up Your Diet

While being overweight isn't the only reason you might have cellulite, it is one of the major causes. A clean diet is key to obtaining clearer, smoother skin. Begin by eliminating sugar, decreasing your intake of carbohydrates, avoiding processed foods and introducing a variety of fruits and vegetables into your meals.

When it comes to produce, a variety of colors is key. By incorporating a large palette of colors onto your plate you will increase the amount of vitamins, nutrients and antioxidants your body will get.

If you are new to "clean eating", juicing is actually a great way to quickly eliminate toxins and flush your system with vitamins and nutrients. I can guarantee this simple change will have your whole body looking vibrant and feeling refreshed.

5. Start Exercising

While cellulite is sometimes unavoidable due to genetics, for some people, weight loss will play a big part in reducing cellulite. Beginning a consistent and comprehensive exercise program can really help you lose weight and burn fat.

If you've been pretty sedentary, start off slow. Begin with a few walks a week and build up your pace and volume from there. If you've been semi-active but need that extra push consider signing up with a personal trainer at your local gym.

Targeting your arms with certain exercises will increase your muscle size and strength, and make upper body fat disappear. Try 3 sets of 12-15 reps of tricep dips, pushups and bicep curls. Let me know if you feel the burn!
